WASHINGTON—Today, Elon Musk announced his departure from the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during a Tesla earnings call, in which the company reported dismal sales and prices.  

Since February 3 of this year, Common Cause has demanded President Trump fire Elon Musk from his position in the White House. Also in February, the 워싱턴 포스트 canceled the watchdog group’s ad asking “who’s really running the White House?”

Elon Musk’s time at the White House was nothing but a performative failure riddled with incompetence and corruption.  

Instead of identifying ways to minimize waste in government, Musk fired thousands of veterans, gutted essential government services, eliminated critical investments in our health and safety, and obtruded himself into our personal data. The reward? His company stands to receive $42 billion of our taxpayer dollars while we get nothing. 

On every metric, Elon Musk has failed this country. That’s because he’s only interested in one thing: making himself richer, while we everyday people struggle to make ends meet.  

Unelected billionaires have no business meddling in our democracy. Together, Common Cause and our 1.5 million members stepped up to hold power accountable, and now Elon Musk is stepping down from DOGE.  

But make no mistake: this isn’t about one oligarch. This is about corrupt billionaires buying their way into government. So, who will it be — us or the wealthy elite? For more than 50 years Common Cause has focused on getting money out of politics and we will continue that fight until those in power are held accountable.
