<\/span>As one of two ways to amend the U.S. Constitution, an Article V convention is a complete unknown<\/span>. While legislators may want to limit the topic to just term limits, there is no guarantee any convention would follow a narrow focus. <\/span>Also,<\/span> since<\/span> Indiana legislators do no<\/span>t <\/span>operate<\/span> under <\/span>term limits <\/span>it would be <\/span>in<\/span>appropriate for<\/span> them to enact this reform <\/span>for<\/span> themselves before forcing <\/span>Congress<\/span> to do so<\/span>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>\u201c<\/span>The last time a constitutional convention was called, the delegates ripped up our country\u2019s governing document and <\/span>came up with<\/span> something entirely new. Because of that, an<\/span> Article V convention is a dangerous threat to all Americans\u2019 constitutional rights and civil liberties. <\/span>Because there is no way to limit a convention\u2019s focus, any Constitutional issue could be brought up, including freedom of speech, civil <\/span>rights<\/span> and civil liberties, voting rights, privacy rights, among others<\/span>. Legislators should reject this <\/span>reckless <\/span>attempt to take <\/span>Hoosiers<\/span> into uncharted waters and threaten our U.S. Constitution,<\/span>\u201d <\/span><\/span>said Julia Vaughn, Executive Director of Common Cause Indiana. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>More than 230 organizations oppose this method for amending the U.S. Constitution, including Common Cause. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>Additionally, Indiana passed a Convention of States Article V resolution in 2016, making SJR21 duplicative and unnecessary for <\/span>its<\/span> stated purpose. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
