","featured_image":"","press_type":146,"authors":"","related_issues":[62,395],"related_work":[238],"location":17},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":true,"person":null,"name":"Julia Vaughn","role":"","phone":"","email":"jvaughn@commoncause.org"},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"The following is a statement from Common Cause Indiana after the Anderson City Council passed \u201cMap H\u201d to redraw their council districts into a map that complied with the 10 percent variance required under the law. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCommon Cause Indiana, League of Women Voters Indiana and the Anderson-Madison County brand of the NAACP <\/span>filed a lawsuit<\/span><\/a> in June 2023 in federal court to force Anderson, Indiana to redraw its badly malapportioned city council districts. \u00a0On September 30, 2024, the judge ruled against the city and required them to draw new districts ASAP. <\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cUpdating districts to reflect new census population counts empowers the people to effectively advocate and ensures equal representation of communities. While we wish the city had not engaged in a long, expensive legal battle that costs Anderson taxpayer money to finally do the right thing, we are happy that a conclusion is in sight.
