For almost 5 months, Hoosiers pushed back against the Trump administration’s demand that the Indiana General Assembly draw new Congressional districts to give Republicans an advantage in the mid-term elections.
While we were able to defeat this effort, it never should have happened. And, if Indiana had a law banning mid-cycle redistricting, it wouldn’t have happened here. Indiana needs to be proactive and make sure our legislature is never again bullied by outsiders to change the maps mid-decade.
Senators Fady Qaddoura (D-Indianapolis) and Senator Greg Walker (R-Columbus) are sponsoring Senate Bill 53, which would ban redistricting at any time other than immediately after the federal census or under a court order. This bill is our top legislative priority in 2026, because we’ve just seen what can happen when desperate politicians decide they can change the rules midstream.
Please contact your state legislators and tell them to support legislation to ban mid-cycle redistricting in Indiana. The Indiana General Assembly just wasted precious time on redrawing maps, when they should have been working to make life better for average Hoosiers. Tell your lawmakers to make sure this doesn’t happen again by passing SB53.
Since August, Indiana has been subject to the “will they, won’t they” of redistricting. Recently, the Senate was able to kill the bill that would have changed congressional districts mid-cycle (HB1032). However, living in the fear that this can happen whenever DC outsiders or our lawmakers decide is not fair to Hoosier voters. Sen. Qaddoura and Sen. Walker have co-sponsored Senate Bill 53, a bill that would make mid-cycle redistricting illegal. Tell your State Senator...
After months of national political pressure, misinformation, and even harassment aimed at forcing a rushed “emergency” redistricting plan, the Indiana Senate refused to give in.
They stopped Trump’s allies from pushing through a map designed to lock in partisan advantage and silence voters before a single ballot could be cast and it was thanks to Common Causers, like you!
Civic engagement in Indiana ranks among the worst in the nation. Marion County alone ranked second to last in voter turnout in Indiana. But what was voter turnout and civic engagement like in the Far Eastside?
