Drop the Bill: Voting Advocates Push Back on Attack on Ballot Access
The ALL IN for Democracy coalition is urging Indiana Senate leadership to withdraw a bill that would shorten Indiana’s early voting window from 28 days to 16 days, after the bill was amended at the last minute in committee.
House Bill 1359 was amended by the Senate Elections Committee last week. The amendment was a surprise to lawmakers and advocates, so the public was given no opportunity to weigh in.
The coalition sent a letter to President Pro Tem Rodric Bray this morning calling for the bill to be withdrawn.
“Early voting is extremely popular across our state and in many counties,” the letter, signed by more than 10 organizations, states. “Please use your position as the leader of the Indiana Senate to stop the advancement of a bill that could create real hardships for Indiana voters and election administrators.”
The letter is signed by Common Cause Indiana, AAUW Indiana, ACLU Indiana, Citizens Action Coalition, Concerned Clergy Indianapolis, Count Us IN, Hoosier Asian American Power, Indiana Alliance of Retired Americans, Indiana Friends Committee on Legislation, Indiana Voices, League of Women Voters of Indiana, and MADVoters.
