EVENT: Second Community Meeting on People First Districts in Valpo
Common Cause Indiana and the League of Women Voters of Porter County invite the public to a second town hall on Oct. 2, 2025, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. to discuss a people–first approach to drawing city council districts. Valparaiso City Councilwoman Barbara Domer is introducing legislation to create an independent redistricting commission to draw city council voting maps.
The two groups will lead a conversation on the proposal that aims to give residents the power to choose their representatives at city hall.
“The people of Valparaiso deserve to be heard when it comes to their local districts and how neighborhoods and communities are grouped together. We’re giving them an opportunity to be heard, to learn about the proposal, and how we think it will help Valparaiso in the future,” said Julia Vaughn, executive director of Common Cause Indiana.
“My decision to run for City Council was prompted, in part, by my involvement with the City Council redistricting process in 2022, and I firmly believe this is a process that can, and should, be directed by voters, not politicians. It is time Valparaiso takes the map drawing process out of the hands of the politicians and into the hands of the people! I look forward to working with Mayor Costas, my fellow Council members, organizations representing voters and all others who support a voter centric reform to create the building blocks of our Council elections here in Valparaiso,” said Barbara Domer, Valparaiso City Councilwoman.
