‘Good Trouble’ rally calls for civil rights in memory of Rep. John Lewis

Camron Hurt/State Director, Common Cause Hawaii: "Lewis told us, “Always get into good trouble,” and we remember that part but I think the part we forget is the part he says next: ‘Necessary trouble. What feels good to you, what feels good may not always feel good for you may not always be good to you, so you must be ready to lay down what you need to to make necessary trouble.’"

HONOLULU (Island News) — Dozens of people rallied outside Honolulu Hale and the Hawaii State Library on Thursday to show that “Good Trouble Lives On.”

Many held signs that said “Power to the People” in protest against the Trump Administration on July 17, 2025. The event was held in honor of the late U.S. Representative John Lewis. He lived by the motto of making “Good Trouble,” which means protesting peacefully and without violence.

Lewis fought to protect civil and human rights and the work of Hawaii’s U.S. Representative Patsy Mink.

The program director of Common Cause Hawaii got to meet Lewis and shared that the legacy of the late lawmaker lives on:

Hawaii joined states across the country in this nationwide celebration.
