","featured_image":"","press_type":145,"authors":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":12070}"],"related_issues":[84,94,103,105,402],"related_work":false,"location":13},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":null,"name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"ATLANTA \u2014 As the Atlanta City Council prepares to vote Monday afternoon on a controversial proposal to build a law enforcement training center, Common Cause Georgia is calling on city and state leaders to respect people\u2019s right to protest and provide more transparency about the project.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe \u201cCop City\u201d proposal, which seeks to build an<\/span> 85-acre police training facility in the middle of a forest southeast of Atlanta, has been hugely controversial, and tensions have heightened following the shooting death by police of a 26-year-old protester.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe Atlanta City Council is scheduled to vote at 1 p.m. today on whether to approve $67 million, up from $30 million, in public funding for the Atlanta Police Foundation to build the facility. The council meeting can be watched live here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe actual costs and potential impacts of the Cop City project must be disclosed fully to the public, with recent <\/span>news reports<\/span><\/a> showing that cost estimates are ballooning and double what it was initially, said Aunna Dennis, Common Cause Georgia\u2019s Executive Director.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cThe residents of Atlanta haven\u2019t had enough opportunities to learn about this project and provide meaningful input,\u201d Dennis said. \u201cKeeping people in the dark about this or any other matter is not how things work in our democracy, and there needs to be more transparency around this controversial project.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn addition, Dennis urged city and state officials to respect people\u2019s right to protest, rights that have come under attack with the coordinated arrests of three organizers of a bail fund that was helping arrested protesters and Gov.
