Statement of Aunna Dennis, Executive Director of Common Cause Georgia<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\r\nIf Republicans thought this was \u2018the right thing to do\u2019 \u2013 they wouldn\u2019t have done it this way.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIf they thought SB 202 was \u2018good public policy\u2019 \u2013 they wouldn\u2019t have rammed it through the General Assembly in only six hours.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIf they thought SB 202 was \u2018in the public interest\u2019 \u2013 they would have made sure the public had a chance to learn about it.<\/span>\r\n\r\nInstead, both House and Senate leadership forced the \u2018omnibus\u2019 anti-voter bill through to the Governor\u2019s desk in just hours, on completely party-line votes.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe bill consolidates legislative leaders\u2019 control over Georgia\u2019s State Election Board. It allows state takeover of county elections offices, which includes the ability to certify future elections \u2013 and the ability to <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> certify them.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis isn\u2019t a hypothetical concern. In the wake of the presidential election, several states \u2013 including Georgia \u2013 saw efforts to overrule the choice of voters. That was not possible, in 2020, because of our election laws. But now those laws will be changing, in ways that will amplify partisan interests and cement partisan control over our elections infrastructure.<\/span>\r\n\r\nGovernor Brian Kemp will be an obvious beneficiary, in his 2022 run for reelection.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIt can\u2019t be a coincidence that the counties mentioned as candidates for state takeover have significant populations of Black and Brown voters.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn a functioning democracy, elections aren\u2019t run by a single political party.<\/span>\r\n\r\nIn a functioning democracy, legislation that affects voting rights isn\u2019t passed and signed in the space of six hours.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThis bill is an insult to Georgia\u2019s voters. Set the rhetoric aside, and look at what it does: it allows the highly partisan state legislature to take over the state\u2019s elections.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThose are supposed to be <\/span>our<\/span><\/i> elections \u2013 the voters\u2019 elections. \u2018We the people\u2019 are supposed to have the final say \u2013 not party leadership.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThere will undoubtedly be legal challenges to this bill \u2013 and there should be.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe right of \u2018the people\u2019 to determine our own government should be sacrosanct.<\/span>\r\n\r\nInstead, today, Republicans in Georgia\u2019s House and Senate showed us exactly how <\/span>little<\/span><\/i> they value our votes.<\/span>"}}]},"yoast_head":"\nAnti-Voter \u2018Omnibus\u2019 Heads to Governor\u2019s Desk -
