Our strength comes from neighbors of different backgrounds working together to build safe, thriving communities.<\/p><p>Right now, Gwinnett leaders have a choice to make.<\/p><p>For decades, Gwinnett participated in a 287(g) agreement that caused immense harm to families throughout the county\u2013 that trauma is still felt in our communities today. Partnerships like 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deputize local law enforcement officers to perform federal immigration enforcement functions inside local jails. Thankfully, after years of local community advocacy, Gwinnett ended their agreement with ICE in 2021.<\/p><p>However, with the passage of HB 1105 in 2024 and increased pressure from the current White House, some localities in our state have recently entered into official partnerships with ICE. That is why it is so vital that Gwinnett leaders hear from community members like you. Communities across the country have raised serious concerns about these agreements because they:<\/p><ul><li><p>Undermine public safety<\/p><\/li><li><p>Expose counties to costly lawsuits and legal liability related to unconstitutional detention and civil rights violations<\/p><\/li><li><p>Divert local resources away from community safety priorities<\/p><\/li><li><p>Damage trust between local government and the communities they serve<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p>Federal immigration enforcement is the responsibility of the federal government, <em>not<\/em> local sheriffs.<\/p><p>When local law enforcement becomes entangled in federal immigration enforcement, it makes communities less safe.<\/p><p>It can also expose counties to significant financial and legal risk.
