Redistricting Activist Toolkit
When politicians choose their voters, we the people lose the power of our votes and our ability to hold them accountable. When we have control of the process or when lawmakers use a nonpartisan process we get more competitive races and better accountability — we’ve done this before and we can do it nationwide. In most states, a small group of politicians and political insiders manipulate our elections by drawing districts for political advantage. This turns democracy on its head by allowing legislators to choose their voters instead of empowering voters to choose their legislators. With little public input or checks, the traditional system of drawing districts for state legislative and congressional seats is notoriously secretive and self-serving.
