Civil Rights & Civil Liberties: Fighting For Our Freedom

Everyone should be able to live safely and thrive – without being attacked for who we are, where we’re from, or what we believe.

America is supposed to be the land of freedom, but we haven’t always lived up to this promise for everyone. Instead, corrupt politicians and big corporations are trying to divide us and chip away at our fundamental freedoms..

Common Cause works closely with our allies to uphold the rule of law and ensure everyone feels safe, welcome, and respected. This means demanding equal access to justice, protecting our right to dissent, opposing political violence in all its forms, and holding firm against an Article V constitutional convention to defend our rights

What We’re Doing

Our Work at the Georgia State Capitol

Legislation

Our Work at the Georgia State Capitol

Every legislative session, Common Cause Georgia shows up at the State Capitol to fight for a democracy that works for everyone. We monitor legislation, advocate for policies that protect and expand voting rights, ensure fair and transparent elections, and push back on efforts to concentrate power or silence civic participation. From redistricting and campaign finance reform to ballot access and ethics in government, we work across issue areas to hold lawmakers accountable and advance the interests of everyday Georgians.

We believe that a healthy democracy requires more than casting a ballot. That's why we also work to ensure that the rules governing our elections and our government are fair, transparent, and free from undue influence, and that all Georgians, regardless of background, have an equal voice in the decisions that shape their lives.

You can read details about important bills we are tracking this session and find letter and call campaigns we have set up to pressure our state elected officials around certain critical bills.

Every first and third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM the Democracy Squad is an informal 30-minutes Zoom space where you can connect with fellow Georgians, learn what's happening in our state, and find your place in the movement. Come to chat, learn, or take action. We are building a people power movement to meet the current moment, and you are a part of it!

Tell Congress: Protect birthright citizenship

Trump’s executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship would endanger millions of people born in this country and permanently reshape what it means to be an American.

The 14th Amendment is clear – and legal experts say Trump would likely need to pass a constitutional amendment through Congress to overrule it.

Congress must step up and REFUSE to help Trump shred our Constitution. We urge you to protect birthright citizenship and our 14th Amendment today.

Don’t let Trump take revenge on nonprofits

Don’t let Trump take revenge on nonprofits

The Senate must REJECT H.R. 9495, which would give President-elect Trump the green light to shut down nonprofits he disagrees with.

This dystopian legislation would hand Trump – and any other future president – a blank check to take revenge against organizations that are peacefully resisting or disagreeing with the White House’s policies.

We urge you to block this shameful bill and protect our right to dissent.
