Professor\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Jowei\u00a0Chen<\/span><\/b>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>University of Michigan<\/span>. Chen pioneered\u00a0<\/span>le\u00a0<\/span>\u00ab<\/span>simulation approach<\/span>"<\/span>\u00a0to create thousands of computer-simulated maps to show that challenged maps fall outside of expected outcomes and can only be explained as partisan gerrymanders. Chen<\/span>'s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>expert testimony\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>been instrumental in states such as\u00a0<\/span>Florida, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina <\/span>to efforts to successfully challenge\u00a0<\/span>partisan gerrymandering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A partner at Patterson Belknap,\u00a0<\/span>Jonah Knobler<\/span><\/b>\u00a0has played a critical role on the pro bono legal team that brought the\u00a0<\/span>Rucho<\/span><\/i>\u00a0v. Cause commune<\/span><\/i><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>a lawsuit before the U.S. Supreme Court challenging North Carolina\u2019s congressional map as an unconstitutional partisan gerrymander.\u00a0<\/span>Additionally, Knobler and\u00a0<\/span>Patterson Belknap\u00a0<\/span>partner Greg\u00a0Diskant\u00a0worked with Common Cause to\u00a0<\/span>write<\/span>\u00a0and file\u202f<\/span>amicus\u202fbriefs in the U.S. Supreme Court\u00a0<\/span>Gill v.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Whitford<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(partisan gerrymandering)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u202f<\/span>\u00c9galit\u00e9<\/span><\/i>\u00a0v. Abbott<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(consideration of noncitizens in redistricting).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Caroline Mackie<\/span><\/b>, partner at\u00a0<\/span>Poyner<\/span>\u00a0Spruill, was one of the central members of the legal team that challenged partisan redistricting of congressional seats in\u00a0<\/span>Cause commune c.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Rucho<\/span><\/i>, and of state legislative seats in\u00a0<\/span>Common Cause v. Lewis.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Based in North Carolina, Mackie played significant roles as local counsel in the\u00a0<\/span>Lewis<\/span><\/i> case, which recently successfully established landmark constitutional protections under North Carolina\u2019s Free Elections clause against partisan gerrymanders. Mackie\u2019s work, along with her colleague Eddie Speas at <\/span>Poyner<\/span>\u00a0Spruill, has resulted in the overturning of North Carolina\u2019s General Assembly districts, with order to redraw the lines in time for the 2020 elections.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
