{"id":58337,"date":"2026-04-03T18:00:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T22:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/?post_type=press&#038;p=58337"},"modified":"2026-04-04T00:04:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-04T04:04:29","slug":"civil-rights-groups-sue-to-stop-trump-order-on-mail-in-ballots","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/press\/civil-rights-groups-sue-to-stop-trump-order-on-mail-in-ballots\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil Rights Groups Sue to Stop Trump Order on Mail in Ballots"},"template":"","class_list":["post-58337","press","type-press","status-publish","hentry","press_type-press-release"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"Common Cause, Black Voters Matter, Lawyers\u2019 Committee, NAACP file in DC  ","featured_image":"","press_type":236,"authors":"","related_issues":[2066],"related_work":false,"location":46},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":true,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":"","name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":[{"file_download":true,"link":null,"file":58904}]}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Washington \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Four\u00a0of the nation\u2019s leading\u00a0civil and\u00a0voting rights groups,\u00a0Common Cause,\u00a0Black Voters Matter,\u00a0Lawyers\u2019\u00a0Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, and NAACP are suing to stop President Trump\u2019s attempt to nationalize elections and prevent\u00a048 million voters\u00a0from casting a ballot with his latest executive order on mail in ballots.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">The lawsuit was filed\u00a0April 3\u00a0in federal court in Washington, D.C.\u00a0This\u00a0is\u00a0one of\u00a0the first legal attempts\u00a0to stop this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">executive order.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\"Mail in voting is so safe that even the president uses it when he votes,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">said Virginia Kase\u00a0Solom\u00f3n, Common Cause President and CEO. \u201c<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is yet another attempt by President Trump to nationalize elections so he can\u00a0pick and choose\u00a0who gets to vote. Common Cause and our one million members firmly reject any president setting election law, especially as a\u00a0last ditch\u00a0effort to avoid being held accountable for his extremely unpopular agenda.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis executive order targeting mail-in ballots is unlawful and usurps congressional authority\u00a0in order to\u00a0stop the midterm elections. This is another blatant attempt to undermine the people\u2019s power,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cliff Albright, co-founder of Black Voters Matter<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0joining this lawsuit to stop this administration from silencing the voices of millions of Americans. Black Voters Matter will continue to fight for free, fair, and accessible elections.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shaylyn Cochran, deputy executive director for the Lawyers\u2019 Committee for Civil Rights Under Law<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, said, \u201cThe executive order is unlawful, unconstitutional, and a clear overreach of executive power. It reflects yet another dangerous attempt by this administration to erect obstacles to the ballot and to intimidate voters. If left to stand, the executive order would upend state laws and procedures on voting, tread on the Constitution, and threaten to shut out a\u00a0significant number\u00a0of Black voters from the political process. In filing today\u2019s lawsuit, we are standing up for the rule of law and standing by the Lawyers\u2019 Committee\u2019s founding commitment to making the promises of our democracy real.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAmericans in every corner of our country, rural and urban, Black and white, rich and poor, healthy and infirm, civilian and servicemember, have participated in mail-in voting for decades without issue,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">said Derrick Johnson, NAACP\u00a0President\u00a0and CEO<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0\u201cThis executive order\u00a0sows\u00a0chaos and discourage voter participation in the midterm elections.\u00a0The NAACP\u00a0will continue to turn to the courts to ensure that everyone can have\u00a0a\u00a0voice in our elections.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">The organizations are part of the largest nonpartisan election protection organization in the United States, 866-OUR-VOTE, a national\u00a0hotline\u00a0and text platform to help voters work through any voting issues.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Their participation in helping voters, and defending their members\u2019 right to vote, gives NAACP and Common Cause standing in fighting this executive order.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">The lawsuit contends states and Congress set rules for elections, not presidents, and this executive order tying federal funding to election procedures is illegal.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">In March 2025, President Donald Trump released an election-related executive order that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/presse\/trumps-executive-order-will-hurt-voters-in-all-50-states\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Common Cause opposed.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 At least five different courts\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/presse\/district-court-confirms-presidents-dont-set-election-law\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">have struck down that executive order<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Common Cause is also currently fighting state-level anti-voter bills through legal battles\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/florida\/presse\/voting-rights-advocates-sue-to-block-floridas-restrictive-show-your-papers-law\/\">Floride<\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0et\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/presse\/nonpartisan-voting-rights-organizations-file-lawsuit-in-indiana-challenging-unlawful-citizenship-check-laws\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indiana.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Common Cause will continue to oppose any state-level legislation that threatens voting rights.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0###<\/p>"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_add_component","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_add_component":null},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_work","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_work":{"heading":"Work","manually_curate":false,"work":null}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
