As a result, large parts of the federal government could soon grind to a halt.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we hear about a \u201cgovernment shutdown,\u201d it can feel overwhelming or confusing. Many of us expect it to affect our daily lives in some way, but the billionaires that benefit from Trump\u2019s agenda won\u2019t feel the impacts.<\/span>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are we facing a government shutdown?<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, Congress is supposed to pass bills that fund the government. If they don\u2019t, the government runs out of money to pay workers and operate many programs, forcing a government shutdown.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, we find ourselves on the brink of a shutdown, and Trump has been unwilling to negotiate on a funding bill that would keep the lights on. Trump and congressional Republicans need Democratic votes to pass a funding bill in the Senate, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/schumer-says-trump-totally-derelict-for-scrapping-negotiations-to-avoid-shutdown\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Democrats are pushing for health care protections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019ve come to the table to talk, but Trump refuses to: he<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/09\/24\/nx-s1-5551193\/trump-cancels-meeting-with-top-democrats-as-threat-of-government-shutdown-looms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> canceled talks with party leaders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is even<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/white-house-trump-layoffs-omb-government-shutdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using the shutdown as an excuse to fire more federal workers and harm the country even more.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The message is clear: Trump and his allies are willing to make everyday Americans\u2019 lives harder to advance an agenda that benefits the ultra-wealthy. Meanwhile, billionaires won\u2019t feel the pain of a shutdown, and they won\u2019t feel the consequences if Democrats accept a bad deal just to avoid one.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not responsible leadership \u2013 it\u2019s a choice to put wealthy interests first, with everyday Americans paying the price.<\/span>"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_image","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_image":{"image":2641,"width":"medium"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Shuts Down and What Stays Open?<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government operations don\u2019t entirely cease when we enter a shutdown, but most agencies have to make drastic cuts to staffing and operations.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal workers will be furloughed or made to work without being paid.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/26\/government-shutdown-jobs-economy-trump.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of thousands of workers will be furloughed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sent home without pay, although by law they will be paid once they return to work). Others, like TSA officers and air traffic controllers, will keep working, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7320516\/government-shutdown-impact-federal-workers-airports-parks-mail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but won\u2019t get their paychecks until after the shutdown ends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means significant hardship for federal workers and their families, plus major slowdowns when it comes to the government operations that keep the country running.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social security and Medicare checks will still go out, but expect major customer service delays.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Trump\u2019s shutdown wouldn\u2019t stop people who already receive social security or Medicare checks from receiving them, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7320516\/government-shutdown-impact-federal-workers-airports-parks-mail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it would cause major bureaucratic delays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people that need help resolving an issue or need to apply for benefits.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans should still be able to access their benefits, but Trump\u2019s shutdown could cause administrative issues and delays.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/contingency-planning\/#:~:text=Not%20impacted%20by%20the%20shutdown&amp;text=VA%20benefits%20will%20continue%20to,burial%20benefits%20processing%20will%20continue.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The VA says that in the event of a government shutdown, key benefits and health care programs should not be affected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but as with Social Security and Medicare, furloughing workers could mean that veterans see delays when trying to navigate the system. Some minor programs, like career counseling and transition assistance programs, will shut down.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States Postal Service will keep running.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/statements\/092525-postal-service-not-affected-by-a-government-shutdown.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USPS is self-funded, so letters and packages will keep moving. <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/aug\/13\/donald-trump-usps-post-office-election-funding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with Trump\u2019s history of attacking the postal service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we need to stay vigilant and look out for ways he could twist the shutdown to justify further efforts to go after vote-by-mail.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WIC will have to stop accepting new applicants immediately, and SNAP will suffer if Trump\u2019s shutdown goes long.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WIC, which supports women, infants, and children, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7320516\/government-shutdown-impact-federal-workers-airports-parks-mail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would likely have to stop accepting new applicants almost immediately<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/advocacy\/government-shutdown-snap-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNAP benefits would continue for a short time, but a long shutdown could put families at risk.<\/span><\/a>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passport services will remain open, but Trump\u2019s shutdown could cause delays.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/usafacts.org\/articles\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-a-government-shutdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bureau of Consular Affairs and its Office of Passport Services is designated as an essential service provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and its operations are supported by the fees that we pay when we apply for a passport. That said, just as with almost every government agency, the general uncertainty of a prolonged government shutdown might cause delays.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s shutdown could threaten housing loan applications.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpamag.com\/us\/mortgage-industry\/industry-trends\/housing-sector-braces-for-shutdown-fallout-as-permanent-job-losses-loom\/550938#:~:text=That%20would%20delay%20loan%20endorsements,volumes%20are%20already%20under%20strain.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a shutdown, the Federal Housing Administration could halt or slow application approvals.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That means big delays for families waiting on mortgages, as well as for developers and homeowners seeking refinancing or rehabilitation funding. First-time buyers that rely on federally backed loans would likely be hit hardest.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National parks and other publicly administered sites will likely close.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspenpublicradio.org\/2025-09-25\/the-federal-government-could-shut-down-on-october-1-heres-what-that-means-for-federal-public-lands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National parks, museums, and monuments will potentially close. If they stay open, facilities will be left without maintenance, which could cause serious damage.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That hurts not only families who want to visit, but also local businesses that depend on tourism.<\/span>\r\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travellers could see long lines and major delays at airports.<\/span><\/h4>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security lines may get longer if TSA workers call in sick because they\u2019re not being paid. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7320516\/government-shutdown-impact-federal-workers-airports-parks-mail\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past shutdowns have caused major delays at airports.<\/span><\/a>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will it affect my daily life?<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trump\u2019s shutdown would cause uncertainty and stress. Families with federal workers may miss paychecks. Low-income families may have trouble buying food if safety-net programs stall. Across the board, delays in federal processing could make it harder for people to get loans, access benefits, or use the government programs they rely on every day.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the longer a shutdown lasts, the worse it usually gets. Local economies lose money, federal agencies fall behind on their work, and the whole country feels the strain.<\/span>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s at Stake<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t about politics in Washington. It\u2019s about who our government serves.
