In the days that followed, <\/span>FEMA\u2019s response was slow and painfully inadequate.<\/b> Now, officials are speaking out, blaming Noem\u2019s policies for tying their hands and delaying life-saving aid.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAccording to reports from <\/span>CNN<\/span><\/i><\/a> et <\/span>Le New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Noem implemented new rules that created extra red tape, including a policy requiring her personal approval for any FEMA spending over $100,000. Because of this, <\/span>special search and rescue teams trained specifically for flood disasters were forced to sit idle<\/b>, waiting on Noem\u2019s signature. That signature didn\u2019t come until more than <\/span>72 hours after the floods began<\/b> \u2013 three critical days during which people were trapped, missing, and dying.<\/span>\r\n\r\nTexas first responders also requested aerial imaging to help locate survivors. That, too, was <\/span>held up by Noem\u2019s approval process<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, FEMA\u2019s call center, an essential resource for those in a disaster zone, was overwhelmed. On July 5th, just one day after the floods began, <\/span>FEMA had to lay off hundreds of contracted workers<\/span><\/a> apr\u00e8s <\/span>Noem failed to renew their contracts<\/b>. With fewer staff answering phones, <\/span>thousands of emergency calls went unanswered<\/b>. On July 6th, <\/span>only one out of every three calls was being picked up.<\/b>\r\n\r\nFEMA\u2019s response to a disaster of this size <\/span>would normally be far more comprehensive<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>But under Noem, the agency has been gutted.<\/b> Instead of preparing FEMA to face the growing number of climate-related disasters, Noem has redirected its mission, downplaying its role in disaster relief and pushing responsibility onto overwhelmed state governments.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe lack of response is outrageous, but unfortunately not surprising. Noem has shown us time and again that <\/span>her priorities lie not in protecting Americans from disaster, but in carrying out harsh immigration crackdowns<\/b>. She\u2019s <\/span>ordered people deported without due process<\/span><\/a> et <\/span>sent detainees to dangerous prisons in El Salvador<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>Her department is built around cruelty and punishment, not safety and disaster relief.<\/b>\r\n\r\nIt is crystal clear where Noem\u2019s priorities lie: when California Senator Alex Padilla criticized her at a press conference in June, <\/span>her agents <\/span>immediately tackled him to the ground and handcuffed him<\/b><\/a>. But when hundreds of Texans, many of them children, were drowning, <\/span>she took three days to act.<\/b>\r\n\r\nHer <\/span>failure to act swiftly and compassionately<\/b> during one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent U.S. history is a disturbing abdication of duty. She had the tools, and she chose to delay.<\/span>\r\n\r\nThat\u2019s not leadership \u2014 it\u2019s negligence. We deserve better from those in charge of our safety. Noem has repeatedly shown us that <\/span>she is more committed to executing the Trump Administration\u2019s inhumane immigration agenda than she is to protecting American lives<\/b>.
