Women are able to do so many things in complex ways. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re able to be wives, mothers, friends, daughters, and sisters, we have to be the boss. We have to manage so many things in our lives, whether it is our households or personal finances. We still have to go to work and expect that we\u2019re going to be able to put dinner on the table. The pandemic put even more strain on women, who were homeschooling their kids between meetings, while also caring for their elders. It\u2019s exhausting. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/america-ferrera-barbie-monologue-full-text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America Ferrera\u2019s Barbie monologue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> struck a chord with so many people:<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25508 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/America-in-Barbie.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"990\" height=\"557\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is literally impossible to be a woman\u2026 Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong\u2026. Always stand out and always be grateful. But never forget that the system is rigged. So find a way to acknowledge that but also always be grateful. You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never fail, never show fear, never get out of line.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite facing impossible expectations, women keep finding ways to show up for one another and stand in our power. Women have propelled this country forward since it was founded, and women are on the frontlines of our most pressing fights today.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re standing on the shoulders of so many women who have come before us. And when I think of women who defied expectations, I think of women like:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/ida-b-wells-barnett\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ida B. Wells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the journalist, and early civil rights leader who dedicated her life to combating prejudice and violence;\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25509 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Ida-B-Wells-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>\r\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/dolores-huerta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dolores Huerta<\/a>, who stood up for migrant workers; and<img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25510\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/DH.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/marsha-p-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marsha P. Johnson<\/a>, who pushed for LGBTQ+ liberation.<img class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25511\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Marsha-P.-Johnson-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of our work today would be possible without these women, and countless other women whose names we\u2019ll never know.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Cause\u2019s history has also been shaped by remarkable women:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/democracy-wire\/ann-mcbride\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Ann McBride Norton<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/05\/12\/us\/politics\/ann-mcbride-norton-first-woman-to-run-common-cause-dies-at-75.html?smid=tw-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first woman to lead <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Cause as president, and who championed campaign-finance laws;<\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_14923\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"300\"]<img class=\"wp-image-14923 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/GettyImages-74894211-1-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"241\" \/> (Photo by Douglas Graham\/Congressional Quarterly\/Getty Images)[\/caption]\r\n\r\n&nbsp;<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/dorothy-height\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Dr. Dorothy Height<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a founding board member of Common Cause who was instrumental in organizing the March on Washington; and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25505 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/gettyimages-98577270-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" \/><\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/people\/kathay-feng-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Kathay Feng<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, our VP of Programs, who is legendary for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefulcrum.us\/kathay-feng-common-cause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0winning an independent redistricting commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her home state of California in 2005.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_25507\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"275\"]<img class=\"wp-image-25507 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/commoncause.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Sharon-Farmer-Photography-0054-275x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"300\" \/> (Sharon Farmer\/sfphotoworks)[\/caption]<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s our turn. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We owe it to future generations to build a strong, inclusive, and transparent democracy where each of us gets an equal say. I believe we\u2019ve been chosen to stand in this challenging moment.
