They also complained that ALEC hides its role in writing state laws. A Common Cause&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/fr\/problemes-2\/more-democracy-reforms\/alec\/whistleblower-complaint\/\" title=\"Whistleblower Complaint\">complaint to the IRS<\/a> challenges ALEC&rsquo;s status as a nonprofit, charitable organization and asserts the group functions as a lobby for its corporate members.<\/p><p>&ldquo;ALEC is a corporate lobby that masquerades as a charity and uses its non-profit tax status to evade lobbying disclosure laws,&rdquo; said Common Cause President Miles Rapoport. &ldquo;It supports a radical policy agenda that would have government ignore climate change, block localities from guaranteeing workers a living wage, and dismantle programs that offer a helping hand to victims of racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination. Ebay should join the dozens of companies that have severed ties with ALEC.&rdquo;<\/p><p>The letter urges eBay to follow the example set by Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Yahoo, International Paper, Occidental Petroleum, News Corporation, and Overstock.com, all companies that recently have announced that they have left ALEC or plan to depart soon.
