\u00c0 propos<\/span> 70 activists from groups including Common Cause, Free<\/span> Presse<\/span>, Color of Change<\/span>, M Power Change, Demand Progress, the <\/span>Communications Workers of America<\/span>, Daily Kos<\/span>, CREDO<\/span>, et le <\/span>United Church of Christ<\/span> gathered<\/span> outside a nondescript office building <\/span>in Hunt Valley, <\/span>MD last week to protest the planned merger of <\/span>the Sinclair<\/span> Broadcast Group and Tribune Media.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The gathering came as Sinclair shareholders met inside to work on their strategy as the merger plan is reviewed by federal regulators. <\/span>If approved, the merger <\/span>volont\u00e9<\/span> create one of the largest <\/span>broadcast<\/span> <\/span>conglomerates<\/span> in history, with<\/span> direct access to more than<\/span> 70% of Americans.<\/span> <\/span>Additionally, Sinclair's<\/span> station ownership would jump<\/span> from 173 stations to more than<\/span> 200,<\/span> with many in major markets like Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\r\n

P<\/span>rotesters came <\/span>in droves <\/span>because of concerns <\/span>sur<\/span> Sinclair\u2019s management of local <\/span>television<\/span> stations it already owns. <\/span>Sinclair\u2019s business model includes forcing its local stations to air \u201cmust-run\u201d news and commentary produced or written at Sinclair\u2019s headquarters.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The segments have generated<\/span> harsh criticism from media analysts. They include<\/span> political commentary from former Trump staffer Boris Epshteyn, and an<\/span> <\/span>Islamo<\/span>phobic \u201cTerrorism Alert Desk.\u201d<\/span><\/a> One must-run segment spawned a 1984-esque mashup <\/span>vir<\/span>un<\/span>l video<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>which featured news anchors from 66 Sinclair-owned stations reciting the same script accusing rival stations of airing \"fake news.\" These segments not only eliminate local news but disguise Sinclair\u2019s opinions with the voice of trusted local broadcasters.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why is <\/span>Sinclair attempting to hide their exponential growth and takeovers of local<\/span> stations? <\/span>Likely because local news is <\/span>more trusted<\/span><\/a> by viewers. Local news also is more likely to reflect the local community and residents' concerns, and remains more vulnerable to community opinion than vast international organizations run by a handful of powerful executives. Sinclair wants to cash in on this trust while creating one of the largest media companies<\/span> in the nation. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

No doubt that's exactly why protesters shouted slogans such as <\/span>\u201cwe want local news, not your right-wing views!\u201d <\/span>at the Sinclair executive board last week. Even Sinclair's decision to seclude the meeting in a building far from a city center did not prevent citizens from showing up to voice their outrage and concern. <\/span><\/p>\r\n
