This bill imposes harsh restrictions on the citizen-led amendment process and would make it extremely difficult for everyday citizens to get an amendment on the ballot:<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sets an unrealistic deadline for submitting petition signatures<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makes the petition gathering process extremely expensive for citizen-led amendments in the future<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threatens community volunteers with potential fines and felony charges for honest mistakes<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next stop for this bill is the Governor\u2019s desk. Restricting citizen-led amendments has been one of the Governor\u2019s top priorities since before the 2025 legislative session, and follows his opposition to citizen-led amendments that were on the ballot in 2024.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Florida Constitution gives citizens in our state the right to place issues on the ballot for the people of Florida to vote on, but this legislature has once again chosen to restrict this right and further concentrate power in their own hands. Floridians must take action by calling the Governor\u2019s office and demanding a veto. We cannot stand by quietly while they attempt to silence us. Our Governor claims we are the \u2018free state of Florida,\u2019 but with policies like HB1205 we are increasingly becoming the corporate state of Florida where only the ultra wealthy are able to have their voices heard,\u201d said <\/span><b>Amy Keith, Common Cause Florida Executive Director.<\/b><b>\r\n<\/b>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe power of governing resides with the people. The Florida Constitution belongs to the people of Florida and it gives the people of Florida the ability to directly govern themselves by engaging in a citizen-led amendment process. Today, the Florida Legislature voted to severely restrict our right of self-governing. We won\u2019t stand for extreme restrictions on our right to amend our own constitution. HB1205 passed its final hearing today, and our lawmakers chose political self-interest over the will of the people. Now, once again, the Citizen-Led Amendment process is being systematically restricted, making it harder for everyday Floridians to participate in their democracy.
