Just this year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/articles\/ranked-choice-voting-brought-new-yorkers-together-in-this-years-democratic-primary\/\"><b>New York City used RCV in its Democratic Primary<\/b><\/a><b>\u200b\u200b<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading to a grassroots candidate with broad support defeating a candidate with big money backers.<\/span>\r\n\r\nSo what is Ranked Choice Voting, and why does it matter for Florida?\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/articles\/ranked-choice-voting-how-does-it-work\/\"><b>How Ranked Choice Voting Works <\/b><\/a>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of picking just one candidate, voters <\/span><b>rank candidates in order of preference<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and votes are redistributed based on the next-ranked choice. This continues until someone wins with majority support.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranked Choice Voting helps ensure elections reflect the will of the people and that the winner is someone with broad majority support, not just a narrow base. It gives every voter more voice and every vote more impact.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<strong>Why It Matters<\/strong>\r\n\r\nRCV has many great benefits:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>It encourages more civil campaigns, as candidates have the opportunity to reach a broader range of voters.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Increases voter choice, as you can support your favorite candidate without worrying.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Ensures winners better reflect the will of the people.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<strong>Florida's Experience\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<b>Sarasota voters recognized these benefits and approved RCV<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> for local elections way back in 2007.<\/strong> But after years of back and forth about the implementation of the new system, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/Statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=&amp;URL=0100-0199\/0101\/Sections\/0101.019.html\"><b>the Florida Legislature passed a law in 2022 that banned local governments from using RCV<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
