Florida has a history of making it harder for many voters to cast a ballot, especially those in Black and brown communities and voters with disabilities. But there\u2019s a powerful way to remove barriers and stop discrimination \u2013 the Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA) \u2013 and you can write a Letter to the Editor in support of the FLVRA. <\/strong><\/p>

A letter to your local paper about the Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA) can help inform your community, shift public opinion, and pressure lawmakers to pass the FLVRA during the next legislative session, allowing for the protection of voting rights and expansion of voting access.<\/p>

Write a Letter to the Editor to Support the Florida VRA<\/strong><\/p>

Here's how:<\/strong><\/p>

  1. Choose a publication<\/strong> that syndicates in your local community and read the guidelines on the \u201cSubmit a Letter to the Editor\u201d page. <\/p><\/li>

  2. Keep it short. <\/strong>Aim for 150-200 words, though some publications accept longer letters. <\/p><\/li>

  3. In the first two sentences of your letter, <\/strong>mention the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA), share disappointment that Florida legislators failed to pass it in 2025, and call on them to pass it during the 2026 legislative session. <\/p><\/li>

  4. Identify three things <\/strong>the bill would do. Use this fact sheet<\/a> and refer to the Common Cause Florida FLVRA webpage<\/a>.<\/p><\/li>

  5. Use your voice. <\/strong>In one sentence explain why those three provisions in the FLVRA matter to you or should matter to others. <\/p><\/li>

  6. Urge your community and lawmakers to support the FLVRA.<\/strong><\/p><\/li>

  7. Review your letter <\/strong>to ensure it is accurate and meets the guidelines.<\/p><\/li>

  8. Submit your letter<\/strong> directly to your local newspaper's website or opinion email.<\/p><\/li>

  9. Follow up. <\/strong>Editors are busy, so to increase your chance of getting published, send a follow-up email 48 hours after your initial submission. <\/p><\/li><\/ol>
