Florida Voting Rights Act

Common Cause Florida is advocating for the passing of the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA), a state-level voting rights act that seeks to expand voter access by providing key protections that prevent and guard against discriminatory voting practices.

FLORIDA’S OWN VOTING RIGHTS ACT

Florida has a long history of enacting laws that attack our democracy and create obstacles to the ballot box for eligible voters of color.

The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act (or FLVRA) is an important bill (SB 1582 and HB 1409) that promises to expand voter access in Florida by providing key protections that prevent and guard against discriminatory voting practices.

The FLVRA builds on the foundations of the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965, as well as successful state Voting Rights Acts enacted in New YorkConnecticutMinnesota, California, Oregon, Washington, and Virginia.

If enacted, the FLVRA would become the most comprehensive state Voting Rights Acts in the nation and it would make Florida the first state in the deep south to introduce and pass a state-level Voting Rights Act.

Floridians rally for the passage of the Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA)

The Florida Voting Rights Act (FLVRA) would ensure every Floridian can vote freely and fairly—especially communities that have been historically marginalized and targeted by voter suppression efforts.

Passing the Florida Voting Rights Act would:

  • Repeal recent Florida laws that have made it harder to vote by mail
  • Establish Election Day as a holiday and authorize Same-Day Voter Registration
  • Require counties with histories of voter suppression to get preclearance before making voting changes
  • Expand access to the ballot for eligible voters who don’t speak English
  • Strengthen transparency and accountability around election changes
  • And more!

We can make Florida a leader in voting again

The Florida Voting Rights Act is freedom to access the ballot for all eligible Floridians. Not just a selected few.

Civil Rights Champion Leaves Legacy of Fighting For The Ballot

It is hard to put into words what Senator Thompson meant to Florida. She worked to make not just her district, but all of Florida, a better place to live.
