HB991/SB1334 Would Block Thousands of U.S. Citizens from Casting a Ballot
Common Cause Florida is warning Florida voters they will be affected by new voting laws after Florida House and Florida Senate committees advanced a dangerous Florida version of the federal SAVE Act.
Under these proposed bills, HB991 and SB1334, U.S. citizens registered to vote in Florida who don’t have a driver license or state ID will get a notice in the mail. If they don’t respond to that notice in 30 days, they’ll be kicked off the voting rolls. These voters won’t be able to vote until they submit specific, costly documents. And if they can’t afford these documents or it’s impossible to get them, they won’t be able to vote.
“These bills are a modern day poll tax that will block tens of thousands of U.S. citizens from voting, especially students, seniors and people with disabilities,” Common Cause Florida Executive Director Amy Keith said.
These bills are the latest example of the Florida legislature attempting to pick and choose who can vote. This is shown in the numbers: from 2022 to 2025, Florida’s population grew by over 1 million people, but our voter registration list shrank by over 1 million people.
