Some states, like California, listened to our expertise and drafted legislation in line with our standards.  \r\n\r\n<b>Why It Matters:<\/b> Redistricting is so much more than lines on a map. Fair maps mean fair representation, fair votes, and a fair future for everyone. Our fairness criteria ensure members of Congress are accountable to the people they represent when it comes to affordable housing, the cost of groceries, and so much more. \r\n\r\n<b>Background:<\/b> When President Trump pushed to rig Texas maps in favor of Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, he set off a chain reaction of other mid-decade redistricting efforts to both counteract and replicate this move. It was an unprecedented attempt at a power grab through abusing redistricting. In the process, he was causing real harm to everyday people\u2019s lives, from getting rid of the people responsible for keeping our food and water safe to keeping peace abroad.\r\n\r\n<b>Background:<\/b> While at DOGE, Elon Musk was pushing to dismantle the nation\u2019s safety nets, all while disregarding the serious conflicts of interest that put Musks\u2019 interests at odds with the public\u2019s interests. Along with our allies, we passed the Colorado Voting Rights Act, which created first in the nation protections for LGBTQ+ voters and eligible voters confined to county jails, expanded language access, and strengthened protections against racial discrimination. In Maryland, we  expanded language access protections to ensure every voter, no matter which language they speak, can participate in our democracy. \r\n\r\n<b>Why It Matters:<\/b> Since we can no longer rely on federal protections alone to protect our right to the ballot box, state-level voting protections are more important than ever. Thanks to our advocacy, more voters will have a fair say and fair access to the ballot in Maryland and Colorado for generations to come. \r\n\r\n<b>Background:<\/b> Courts, Congress, and now the White House are eroding federal voting rights protections in real time. The Supreme Court scrapped major parts of the federal Voting Rights Act. The Trump administration is dismantling the Department of Justice, which enforces the Voting Rights Act in all 50 states. All three states rescinded, and in two of the states, our work secured unanimous, bipartisan votes.\r\n\r\n<b>Why It Matters:<\/b> By stopping an Article V Convention in its tracks, we are protecting all people\u2019s fundamental rights and freedoms. This includes the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to vote, and the right to a trial by jury, to name a few \u2014 all of which would be up for complete rewrites if an Article V Convention happened.\r\n \r\n<b>Background:<\/b> An Article V Constitutional Convention is one of the most consequential threats to our democracy. It is triggered when two-thirds of state legislatures formally call for it. Once called, it would give bad actors and special interests free reign to rewrite our constitution, with no way to stop it. Over the last decade, Common Cause has stopped  13 states from moving forward, including Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon, New York.
