Ohioans passed Issue 1, which implemented partisan balance in the drawing of General Assembly districts, with an overwhelming 71 percent of the vote last November. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocmc.ohio.gov\/ocmc\/committees\/leg_exec_branch\">Legislative Branch and Executive Branch Committee<\/a> will vote in a hearing beginning at 10:00 am ET on Thursday, February 4 on whether to recommend empowering the redistricting commission Issue 1 created to draw congressional districts.<\/p><p>The new redistricting commission Issue 1 created:<\/p><\/p><ul><li>Is forbidden from drawing districts primarily to favor or disfavor a political party;<\/li><li>Gives the minority party at that at least two spots on the seven-person commission;<\/li><li>Requires that districts reflect the statewide vote; and<\/li><li>Limits the amount of time an approved map will be in effect if it is approved without at least two minority party votes. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><p><p>Former Governor Bob Taft, a member of the committee, has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/stories\/local\/2016\/01\/15\/panel-weighs-congressional-gerrymandering.html\">expressed his support for the proposal<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/videos.cleveland.com\/plain-dealer\/2015\/12\/john_kasich_favors_dramaticall.html\">Governor John Kasich<\/a> and former <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/content\/blogs\/the-daily-briefing\/2016\/01\/01-13-16-voino-redistricting.html\">Governor and U.S. Senator George Voinovich<\/a> also recently announced their support for ending the manipulation of congressional districts for political advantage.<\/p><p>The Constitutional Modernization Commission&rsquo;s reports and recommendations are available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocmc.ohio.gov\/ocmc\/reports\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>"}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
