On November 5th, 2019 New Yorkers overwhelmingly approved Ranked Choice Voting for local elections. Nearly 75% of voters were in favor of the proposal.<\/b><\/h3>\r\n

How does this change voting for New Yorkers?\r\n<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nStarting in 2021, instead of voting for just one candidate, New Yorkers would be able to rank their top 5 candidates from first to last choice on the ballot in all primary and special elections for Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate, Borough President and City Council.\u00a0Si los votantes todav\u00eda quieren votar por un solo candidato, pueden hacerlo.<\/em>\r\n

A candidate who collects a majority of the vote, fifty percent plus one, wins. If\u00a0no candidate receives over 50 percent of the first choice preferences, the candidate with the fewest first choice preferences is eliminated and voters who ranked that candidate first have their ballots instantly counted for their second choice preference.\u00a0The process is repeated until there\u2019s a final pair with a majority winner.<\/p>\r\n\r\n
