Why is mid-decade redistricting happening now? One of the most straight forward reasons is President Donald Trump doesn’t want to lose control of the U.S. House in 2026. And that’s likely true!
In fact, many Republican state lawmakers have received the assignment from the President and have been happy to follow the President in breaking historical norms with mid-decade redistricting.
Here’s what some of them are saying:
But is that the only goal?
Because a disturbing trend has appeared — Trump is also targeting majority Black voter districts.
In Missouri, Trump and state lawmakers split a current Congressional district with a majority of black voters in half. In North Carolina, Trump and Republican lawmakers cracked the “Black Belt” district in eastern NC. Now, Trump and some Republicans want to do the same in Indiana, targeting two separate centers of black voters’ power.
It’s no secret Republicans want to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and Black and brown voting power all together.
So is mid-decade redistricting another underhanded way of splitting minority voting power via Congressional representation?
