Republicans Latest Attempt to Silence Voters: A Wall of Fees
Entrada de blog
As many state legislatures return to session this year, the question of mid-decade redistricting is popping back up in the news.
Here’s where it stands in the new year: Virginia will allow a vote to proceed on whether to adopt new congressional maps for the rest of the decade on April 21.
Florida has a pending special session slated for late April.
Maryland Democrats are considering changing their maps, even though it would only give them one additional seat in Congress. Speaker Jeffries is even entering the fray, traveling to Baltimore himself to get it done.
And now, CNN reports Pennsylvania, Washington state, and Colorado may join the fray.
Here are three Things to remember as mid-cycle redistricting continues in 2026:
1. Mid-decade redistricting is already a failure for President Trump.
Last summer, President Trump kicked off a national redistricting war and so far, he’s losing.
Trump thought he could excessively gerrymander select states without repercussions, starting with Texas. But his gamble has launched a multi-state battle that election observers say will likely be a wash when it comes to partisan advantage.
Even if Florida delivers more seats to Republicans, the gloves are off, and other states are reacting.
2. There’s movement in Congress to ban this gamble by President Trump.
Rep. Kevin Kiley, a Republican, introduced a bill to stop mid-decade redistricting. Senator Alex Padilla and Rep. Zoe Lofgren have also introduced a bill to stop it. If you want to reach out to your members of Congress to ask them to support these efforts, you can do so here. It’s a popular thing, according to Common Cause polling.
3. Independent redistricting commissions need to be in place by 2030.
Congress banning mid-cycle redistricting would be a great start to secure fair maps for all voters. But the real move is making sure all 50 states have a level playing field, and the best way to do that is with independent redistricting commissions in place by the next Census in 2030.
Common Cause championed landmark commissions in California, Colorado, and Michigan. We’re fighting to get more in place by 2030. It’s the only way the people can no longer be subject to gerrymandering and partisan power plays. Learn more about independent redistricting commissions here.
