In 2025, we saw the militarization of our cities, attacks on our voting rights, and our elected leaders catering to billionaires rather than the people. We’ve never faced an administration that has done this much damage this quickly. But thanks to our members in every state and every congressional district, we fought for the people and earned unprecedented victories — two new state voting rights acts, AI protections for voters, and so much more. We are grateful to all those who joined our People’s Lobby, in ways big and small, and made sure the people’s interests came first.

First to Set the Standard for Mid-Decade Redistricting

La victoria: Common Cause led the charge holding leaders pushing mid-decade redistricting accountable to the people, protecting fair representation in a principled way. We demanded any proposed maps meet our fairness criteria, or they would meet opposition from the People’s Lobby. Some states, like California, listened to our expertise and drafted legislation in line with our standards.

Por qué es importante: Redistricting is so much more than lines on a map. Fair maps mean fair representation, fair votes, and a fair future for everyone. Our fairness criteria ensure members of Congress are accountable to the people they represent when it comes to affordable housing, the cost of groceries, and so much more.

Fondo: When President Trump pushed to rig Texas maps in favor of Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, he set off a chain reaction of other mid-decade redistricting efforts to both counteract and replicate this move. It was an unprecedented attempt at a power grab through abusing redistricting. We knew we had to step up, and that’s why we created clear and consistent standards with our six fairness criteria.

Fired Elon Musk

La victoria: We ran a campaign to fire Elon Musk from any role within our government that gained national attention, and generated thousands of letters to Congress from our members, leading up to his resignation from DOGE.

Por qué es importante: Elon Musk, an unelected billionaire, was attempting to run our government like one of his companies at the people’s expense — while upending our privacy rights. In the process, he was causing real harm to everyday people’s lives, from getting rid of the people responsible for keeping our food and water safe to keeping peace abroad.

Fondo: While at DOGE, Elon Musk was pushing to dismantle the nation’s safety nets, all while disregarding the serious conflicts of interest that put Musks’ interests at odds with the public’s interests. Even more concerning was that President Donald Trump allowed it to happen.

Secured Major Voting Rights Wins, Including a First for LGBTQ+ Voters

La victoria: Common Cause cemented sweeping voting rights protections into state law. Along with our allies, we passed the Colorado Voting Rights Act, which created first in the nation protections for LGBTQ+ voters and eligible voters confined to county jails, expanded language access, and strengthened protections against racial discrimination. In Maryland, we expanded language access protections to ensure every voter, no matter which language they speak, can participate in our democracy.

Por qué es importante: Since we can no longer rely on federal protections alone to protect our right to the ballot box, state-level voting protections are more important than ever. Thanks to our advocacy, more voters will have a fair say and fair access to the ballot in Maryland and Colorado for generations to come.

Fondo: Courts, Congress, and now the White House are eroding federal voting rights protections in real time. The Supreme Court scrapped major parts of the federal Voting Rights Act. The Trump administration is dismantling the Department of Justice, which enforces the Voting Rights Act in all 50 states. And Congress has refused to pass national voting rights protections to protect all voters, regardless of what state they live in.

Stopped 4 Article V Conventions Efforts

La victoria: Common Cause protected the rights of all Americans when we successfully advocated for four states — California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Washington — to rescind all previous applications for a dangerous Article V Convention. All three states rescinded, and in two of the states, our work secured unanimous, bipartisan votes.

Por qué es importante: By stopping an Article V Convention in its tracks, we are protecting all people’s fundamental rights and freedoms. This includes the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to vote, and the right to a trial by jury, to name a few — all of which would be up for complete rewrites if an Article V Convention happened.

Fondo: An Article V Constitutional Convention is one of the most consequential threats to our democracy. It is triggered when two-thirds of state legislatures formally call for it. Once called, it would give bad actors and special interests free reign to rewrite our constitution, with no way to stop it. Over the last decade, Common Cause has stopped 13 states from moving forward, including Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, New Jersey, Illinois, Oregon, New York.

Protected the Vote in 14 States

La victoria: Common Cause helped thousands of voters navigate their local and state elections on November 4. We recruited over 530 volunteers for on-the-ground poll monitoring in addition to operating our nonpartisan hotline, supporting voters across 14 states.

Por qué es importante: Voting unlocks the door to all of our other rights and freedoms. Without it, our democracy would crumble, and regular folks wouldn’t have a say on the elected leaders and issues that impact their everyday lives.

Fondo: Common Cause co-leads the Election Protection coalition to help Americans across the country navigate the voting process and cast their ballot without obstacles, confusion, or intimidation. Voting rights demand more than just what’s on paper — they must be exercised, upheld, and protected. That’s why we’re prepared to support voters through anything and everything, from outdated laws, language barriers, and disinformation, to threats of political violence and federal interference.

Blocked a Federal Power Grab on Voter Data

La victoria: In another attempt to target and intimidate our communities, the Trump administration demanded full access to many states’ voter files. We went to court to protect voters’ sensitive personal data in Minnesota, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania.

Por qué es importante: Unelected bureaucrats in Washington have no business accessing people’s personal information. It’s illegal, and it makes voters more vulnerable to hackers and scammers.

Fondo: To try and force states’ hands in turning over voter data, the DOJ filed lawsuits against Minnesota, Maine, Oregon, California, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

Protected Truth in the Age of AI

La victoria: Common Cause passed a critical update to the California AI Transparency Act, a landmark measure that will help the public discern truth from fiction online by tackling the growing threat of AI-generated disinformation.

Por qué es importante: Generative AI is reshaping our information ecosystem at lighting speed, making it harder to tell what’s real and what’s not. This leaves everyday people vulnerable to dangerous disinformation that could wrongly influence how they think or make decisions — which is especially troubling when it comes to voting.

Fondo: The expansion of the California AI Transparency Act builds on the monumental laws we passed last year, giving Californians tools to navigate the rise of AI-generated disinformation, increasing transparency about the source of information we see online, and rebuilding trust in our information ecosystem.
