{"id":388,"date":"2024-04-20T16:29:32","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T16:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/emerging-power\/?post_type=press&#038;p=388"},"modified":"2024-06-10T16:32:13","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T16:32:13","slug":"cc-voter-data-high-youth-voting-turnout","status":"publish","type":"press","link":"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/emerging-power\/press\/cc-voter-data-high-youth-voting-turnout\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Cause Lauds Voter Data Revealing Youth Voting Has Increased Over the Decade"},"template":"","class_list":["post-388","press","type-press","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":{"details":{"summary":"","featured_image":"","press_type":false,"authors":"","related_issues":[116,370],"related_work":false,"location":3},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":"","name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<b>WASHINGTON, D.C.<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 Common Cause, a voting rights watchdog group, applauds the Center for Information &amp; Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts Tisch College for its recent report on young voting.\r\n\r\nAmong the data, key findings of the report included:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">A national youth voter turnout of 23%, a 10-percent jump since 2014.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">49 out of 50 states increased their voter turnout since 2014.<\/li>\r\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Four states \u2014\u00a0<b>Arkansas<\/b>,\u00a0<b>Michigan<\/b>,\u00a0<b>New York<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Pennsylvania\u00a0<\/b>\u2014 increased their youth turnout since 2018.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\u201cIt is important that young people are heard \u2014 no matter their race, party, location, or education level,\u201d wrote\u00a0<b>Alyssa Canty, director of Youth Programs at Common Cause<\/b>. \u201cCIRCLE\u2019s data shows that more young people are able to make informed political decisions and engage in the political process when states make voting more accessible. And it is crucial young people play a critical role in our democracy \u2014 both in policies that are passed and in democracy as a whole.\u201d\r\n\r\nOf the states that ranked toward the top for youth turnout, many made it more accessible to vote, whether it be through same-day registration, weekend early voting, or by sending mail-in ballots to registered voters, among other pro-democracy efforts.\r\n\r\n\u201cIn 2022, young Pennsylvanians turned out to reject fear mongering, major cuts to public education, and false narratives around crime,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Jill Greene, voting and election manager at Common Cause Pennsylvania<\/b>. \u201cWe have no doubt that the expansion of mail-in voting helped contribute to this rise in youth turnout, and we hope that lawmakers in Harrisburg see this rise as a major benefit of making our elections more accessible.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cFrom Michigan\u2019s same day voter registration to passing the state\u2019s Protect the Vote proposal, we are committed to making voting more accessible for young people in the Great Lake State,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Shannon Abbott, outreach and engagement organizer at Common Cause Michigan<\/b>. \u201cThings aren\u2019t perfect, but we\u2019ll continue to pressure our leaders to make sure the next generation knows they have a voice in our democracy.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe report, released earlier this month, uses\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/circle.tufts.edu\/2022-election-center#how-young-voters-view-political-parties-and-democracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0of voter file data from the 2022 midterm elections.\r\n\r\nTo view the online version of this release, click here.\r\n\r\n###"}},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_add_component","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_add_component":null},{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_work","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_work":{"heading":"Work","manually_curate":false,"work":null}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
