The bill will create an automatic voter registration system at the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles, and potentially other state agencies. The bill was approved by the state Senate on March 30; it now heads to the desk of Gov. John Carney.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new system is expected to cost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legis.delaware.gov\/json\/BillDetail\/GetPdfDocument?fileAttachmentId=389312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">less than $22,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to implement.<\/span>\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><b><i>Statement of Claire Snyder-Hall, Director of Common Cause Delaware<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Common Cause Delaware applauds the passage of the Automatic Voter Registration bill (SB 5) by the General Assembly. Our government \u2018by the people\u2019 is stronger when more people participate, and with AVR in place, we move closer to the goal of 100%\u00a0 voter registration.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The bill is much needed because according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/DE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Census estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at least 10,000 Delawareans of voting age are not registered to vote. They also indicate that 12.6% of Delawareans have moved within the past year, and may not have updated their voter registration. AVR will address both those problems without requiring extra paperwork.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other states that have implemented \u201cAVR\u201d have touted its benefits. For example, Georgia\u2019s Secretary of State credits its AVR system with registering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sos.ga.gov\/index.php\/elections\/georgia_easy_voter_registration_options_break_new_records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">almost two-thirds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the Peach State\u2019s voters. Oregon\u2019s Governor called AVR <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/02\/22\/automatic-voter-registration-oregon-1181199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a \u201cphenomenal success\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that increased registration among minorities, and less urban and less wealthy voters. Connecticut\u2019s Secretary of State said AVR was \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/SOTS\/Press-Releases\/2020-Press-Releases\/Secretary-of-the-State-Denise-Merrill-Announces-Legislative-Proposal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wildly successful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d and credited it with adding 400,000 new voters and updating more than 550,000 previous registrations.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AVR has been adopted and implemented <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/automatic-voter-registration-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 19 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and is part of the \u201cFor the People Act\u201d now being debated in the US Senate. If <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/policy-solutions\/annotated-guide-people-act-2021#t1-sa-p2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">implemented nationwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, AVR could register up to 50 million new eligible voters while making voter registration rolls more accurate, saving money, and cutting down on confusion and other problems at the polls.<\/span>"}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
