It is a matter of public\u00a0record.\u00a0In recent months,\u00a0the President has displayed incoherent and erratic behavior that\u00a0puts our country at risk. He has issued multiple public communications\u00a0containing\u00a0incoherent, garbled language that cannot be\u00a0explained away.\u00a0He routinely misstates basic facts and shows an inability to speak coherently on a single topic for more than a few sentences.\u00a0He has offered\u00a0numerous\u00a0and inconsistent explanations for why we began the\u00a0Iran\u00a0war, as well as inconsistent demands for what Iran must do to\u00a0end the\u00a0war.\u00a0He has threatened war crimes against\u00a0the civilian population, including a\u00a0profanity-laced\u00a0threat on Easter Sunday.\u00a0The irrationality of\u00a0his actions\u00a0threatens\u00a0U.S. security and\u00a0that\u00a0of our allies, including the threat\u00a0to\u00a0remove the\u00a0U.S.\u00a0from NATO\u00a0because they\u00a0are not doing his bidding. That is the hallmark of an\u00a0unstable authoritarian.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The White House has acknowledged brain imaging and cognitive\u00a0testing,\u00a0but\u00a0has refused to provide transparency about the results.\u00a0At the same time, public confidence has eroded sharply, with\u00a0most\u00a0Americans\u2014including members of his own party\u2014now questioning his mental fitness.\u00a0The\u00a0Cabinet and\u00a0the\u00a0Vice\u00a0President\u00a0can no longer\u00a0cover up\u00a0the severity of the President\u2019s health.\u00a0The 25th Amendment exists for precisely this situation: when a president is unable or unwilling to recognize their own incapacity, and those around them must act to protect\u00a0our\u00a0nation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">If the Cabinet and\u00a0Vice\u00a0President\u00a0Refuse to Act, Congress Should Impeach\u00a0and Remove\u00a0the President<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:60}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the Cabinet and the Vice President refuse to act, then Congress, especially\u00a0members of the\u00a0President's\u00a0own party,\u00a0must demand his immediate resignation and begin\u00a0impeachment\u00a0proceedings against\u00a0the President.\u00a0President Trump\u2019s\u00a0behavior\u00a0constitutes\u00a0\u201chigh\u00a0crimes\u00a0and misdemeanors\u201d\u00a0and demands impeachment\u00a0and removal.\u00a0His recent\u00a0threats\u00a0against the civilian population of Iran, that \u201ca whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,\u201d\u00a0alone\u00a0meet\u00a0the standard.\u00a0These threats\u00a0constitute\u00a0war crimes and violate\u00a0U.S. domestic law, including the War Crimes Act, and widely recognized international law, including the\u00a0Geneva Conventions.\u00a0\u00a0As we have\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/de\/ressourcen-2\/trumps-iran-war-is-illegal-and-congress-must-stop-it\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">previously stated<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Iran War is illegal and was intentionally started as\u00a0a war of choice,\u00a0seizing power that properly belongs to Congress. This is what\u00a0authoritarians\u00a0do:\u00a0they\u00a0consolidate\u00a0power,\u00a0piece by piece,\u00a0and dismantle accountability, undoing the rule of law,\u00a0until\u00a0they\u00a0can\u00a0threaten\u00a0the\u00a0annihilation of\u00a0an entire civilization.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Other actions\u00a0also constitute\u00a0impeachable offenses. The\u00a0President has turned the machinery of justice into a political weapon while using the presidency for personal gain. He\u00a0has\u00a0personally\u00a0directed investigations and prosecutions toward perceived political enemies rather than legitimate wrongdoing.\u00a0He has blurred the line between public office and private profit\u00a0by\u00a0selling access, accepting financial benefits from those seeking influence, and expanding conflicts of interest beyond any modern precedent.\u00a0Most alarmingly\u00a0for our political system, the president has moved directly against the integrity of U.S. elections.\u00a0He has openly acknowledged his motives: he fears\u00a0accountability\u00a0if his party loses\u00a0control of Congress.\u00a0He has\u00a0signaled\u00a0a willingness to use\u00a0federal law enforcement,\u00a0acting as secret police, and\u00a0military force\u00a0to preserve his power.\u00a0Layered on top of this is a growing climate of intimidation. Civil society groups,\u00a0humanitarian\u00a0organizations, and election advocates have been targeted, sending a clear message:\u00a0democratic\u00a0participation\u00a0comes with risk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taken together, these actions point to a presidency no longer bound by law, but driven by power, retribution, and self-interest.\u00a0Regardless of party affiliation, we call on Congress to put their love of our country above loyalty to one man.\u00a0If he is allowed to continue to turn the Presidency into a\u00a0dictatorship,\u00a0future generations of\u00a0Americans\u00a0will bear unimaginable burdens.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p aria-level=\"2\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Conclusion: Constitutional Duty<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:60}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">For members of the Cabinet and\u00a0the Vice President,\u00a0the path forward is clear. The Constitution provides remedies for precisely this moment.\u00a0It is time to invoke the 25th Amendment.\u00a0If the Cabinet and\u00a0the\u00a0Vice President cannot discharge these responsibilities,\u00a0Congress must impeach and remove the president. Failure to act will not be remembered as\u00a0a\u00a0restraint.
