If a president disagrees with this assertion, they can take it to Congress to make the final decision.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Has it\u00a0ever\u00a0been\u00a0used?<\/span><\/b>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Parts of the amendment have been used before, like to replace a vice president or to temporarily transfer power during medical procedures.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, in 1973, President Richard Nixon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/40-years-ago-gerald-ford-becomes-president-in-a-historic-first\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">nominated Gerald Ford<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to\u00a0serve as vice\u00a0president\u00a0after the position became vacant, and Congress\u00a0confirmed\u00a0him.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another section has been used to temporarily transfer power when a president undergoes a medical procedure. Most recently, President Joe Biden <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/biden-to-have-routine-colonoscopy-temporarily-transfer-power-to-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">briefly handed authority<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to Vice President Kamala Harris when he was under anesthesia.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the section that allows the vice president and cabinet to declare a president unfit has never been used before.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0calling for it:<\/span><\/b>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Increasingly\u00a0erratic\u00a0statements from President Trump have raised urgent concerns about his fitness to lead. The 25<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Amendment exists for exactly this moment: a safeguard for when the president\u2019s actions put American lives, our country \u2014 and the world \u2014 at risk.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s why Common Cause is calling on the vice president and cabinet to act immediately.
