","featured_image":"","article_type":1103,"authors":["{\"site_id\":\"1\",\"post_type\":\"person\",\"post_id\":7755}"],"related_issues":[2066],"related_work":[2068],"location":null},"sidebar":{"helper_enable_sidebar":false,"helper_media_contact":{"heading":"Media Contact","manually_enter_person":false,"person":"","name":"","role":"","phone":"","email":""},"helper_links_downloads":{"heading":"Links & Downloads","links":null}},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":null,"component_wysiwyg":{"content":"No matter what the\u00a0legislation\u00a0is called\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0t<\/span>he\u00a0SAVE Act, the SAVE America\u00a0Act, the MEGA\u00a0Act, proof of citizenship bills\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0they\u00a0<\/span>all have the same outcome: block people from voting.\u00a0If any of these\u00a0bills become law, they\u00a0will prevent U.S. citizens,\u00a0who currently vote,\u00a0from\u00a0being able to vote in the future.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs the\u00a0people\u2019s\u00a0lobby,\u00a0Common Cause\u00a0works to empower\u00a0real voters across the nation every day.\u00a0We know\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0at stake because we know your stories.\u00a0<\/span>Here are\u00a0five\u00a0people\u00a0who will be denied their right to vote if any of these bills are put into law.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCharles:\u00a0a\u00a0grandson of a sharecropper<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCharles is the grandson of a sharecropper, from a family that marched for voting rights from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe military forced his father, Charley, to change his first name to Charles. Another government official tried to make Charles change back to Charley to remain a junior. His sister had even more\u00a0troubles\u00a0with names. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nCharles\u00a0shouldn\u2019t\u00a0be denied the right to vote due to government paperwork problems. But\u00a0if passed,\u00a0the SAVE Act or SAVE America Act will deny him his\u00a0right.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nLetitia:\u00a0Caregiver,\u00a0daughter\u00a0of a veteran<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nLetitia\u2019s story is one\u00a0familiar\u00a0to many American\u00a0military families\u00a0--\u00a0that\u00a0\u201coriginal\u201d birth certificate\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0easy to find\u00a0after being born on base.\u00a0Years ago, Letitia moved to Kansas to care for an ailing family member.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBut\u00a0Kansas\u00a0had\u00a0passed a proof of citizenship bill that required an original birth certificate to register to vote.\u00a0Letitia was denied the right to register to vote, and when her mother could not find the original birth certificate in time,\u00a0Letitia\u00a0was unable to cast a ballot for the first time since\u00a0her\u00a018th\u00a0birthday.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThankfully, a court overturned\u00a0that Kansas\u00a0law in Fish v.\u00a0Kobach,\u00a0and\u00a0restored\u00a0her\u00a0right to vote. But as\u00a0Letitia\u00a0hear\u00a0lawmakers consider the\u00a0same laws\u00a0here in Florida,\u00a0where she now lives,\u00a0she\u00a0remembers\u00a0her\u00a0experience.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nOur\u00a0state\u00a0and nation\u2019s elections have been declared free and\u00a0fair<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0yet this makes elections neither free (you\u00a0have to\u00a0pay to obtain new documents) nor fair (this will disproportionately\u00a0impact\u00a0students, married or divorced women, people with disabilities and seniors).\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0nothing but an attempt to hold onto political power and block people from voting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBetty: my last name doesn\u2019t match my birth certificate\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBecause Betty took her\u00a0spouse\u2019s\u00a0surname, her current legal name no longer matches her birth certificate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a discrepancy that could block her from registering\u00a0to vote\u00a0or casting a ballot.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThese potential laws would also require her to show up in person at the county clerk\u2019s office,\u00a0despite the fact that\u00a0she\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0drive and\u00a0relies\u00a0on medical transportation services\u00a0that\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0take her to government buildings for non-medical reasons.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nNancy: 15 years in service to the GOP, should expired document make her lose the right to vote?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nNancy from Georgia has been voting for\u00a0nearly 70\u00a0years. At 89, she has an expired passport and driver\u2019s license. Like many women, she registered to vote and voted\u00a0using her married name for decades.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBut her birth certificate\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0have\u00a0her current\u00a0last name. Having voted in every election since she turned 21, Nancy lives in a different state than where she was born<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and where she got married.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nNancy was a teacher, a small business owner<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and served on county Republican Party committees for years.\u00a0At her age, with expired documents that would need to be fetched from another state, Nancy is wondering why she\u00a0would\u00a0be disenfranchised from voting.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nPamela: Will losing my home to wildfire make\u00a0me\u00a0lose my right to vote?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nPamela currently lives with her daughter in Virginia.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0because last year, her home in Minnesota burned down in a wildfire out of her control. Pamela\u2019s rebuilding in Minnesota, but not in time to vote in this year\u2019s elections\u00a0in her home state.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nIf the SAVE Act passes, she\u00a0likely will\u00a0be denied the right to vote. Her last name is different from her birth certificate. She lives in a different state due to a disaster.
