Heute stimmt unsere Staatsversammlung \u00fcber ein Gesetz ab, das sowohl die Aufl\u00f6sung des \u00fcberparteilichen Government Accountability Board (GAB) von Wisconsin als auch eine erhebliche Ausweitung des korrumpierenden Einflusses von geheimen Geldern aus anderen Bundesstaaten auf unsere Wahlen vorsieht. Der Staatssenat wird voraussichtlich n\u00e4chste Woche dasselbe tun.

If passed and later signed into law by Governor Walker, these two measures will most assuredly \"wreak havoc\" on democracy in Wisconsin. Assembly Bill 388 decimates the GAB – the agency that ensures we have clean, fair elections, while enforcing our campaign finance, ethics and lobbying laws. AB 388 scraps the current GAB, replacing it with two separate commissions: one focusing on ethics, the other on elections.

And the board's nonpartisan judges? Gegangen<\/strong>!

Stattdessen werden diese beiden Beh\u00f6rden jeweils aus sechs parteipolitischen Ernennungen bestehen \u2013 drei Republikanern und drei Demokraten. 

Hmmm... sounds like a recipe for deadlock.<\/strong>

Nun ja \u2026 die F\u00fchrung der Republikanischen Partei did say that the model for their \"new and improved\" GAB was the Federal Election Commission<\/a> – an agency that, by its chair's own admission, ist sowohl dysfunktional als auch festgefahren<\/a>.

<\/a>What about the GAB's independent funding source for investigations into political corruption? Gegangen<\/strong>!

Instead, the new \"toothless\" GAB will have to go to the legislature for approval of funds needed to investigate legislators.

Warte \u2013 was?!

Weiter geht\u2019s \u2026

Assembly Bill 387. A total re-write of Wisconsin's campaign finance law that, among other things, legalizes the formerly illegal campaign coordination between a candidate and \"so-called\" issue advocacy groups. You know, those groups with names like \"People for a Better Tomorrow\" who run (phony) issue ads, like \"Candidate 'A' hates Wisconsin Cheese! Call Candidate 'A' and tell her to stop hating our cheese!\"

They don't ever say \"Vote for Candidate 'B'\" or \"against Candidate 'A.'\" But you get their meaning.

Warum m\u00fcssen diese Gruppen ihre wahren Absichten so geheim halten? 

Because keeping away from the vote for\/vote against-type language allows them to qualify as an \"issue ad\" group. 

And what's so special about being an issue ad group? 

Indem sie sich f\u00fcr ein Anliegen einsetzen und gleichzeitig einen Kandidaten darstellen (anstatt direkt f\u00fcr einen Kandidaten einzutreten), sind diesen Leuten keine Beschr\u00e4nkungen hinsichtlich des Geldes auferlegt, das sie f\u00fcr den Versuch ausgeben k\u00f6nnen, eine Wahl zu beeinflussen, und sie sind nicht verpflichtet, die Herkunft ihres Geldes offenzulegen. 

Und genau das macht AB 387 so be\u00e4ngstigend.

Dieses Gesetz wird es Kandidaten \u2013 f\u00fcr die Obergrenzen f\u00fcr Wahlkampfspenden und Offenlegungspflichten gelten \u2013 erm\u00f6glichen, Seite an Seite mit themenbezogenen Werbegruppen zu arbeiten, um gew\u00e4hlt zu werden. Damit erhalten die Kandidaten im Prinzip Zugriff auf unbegrenzte Wahlkampfgelder, w\u00e4hrend die \u00d6ffentlichkeit im Dunkeln dar\u00fcber bleibt, wer unsere Wahlen und (nachfolgend) unsere gew\u00e4hlten Amtstr\u00e4ger beeinflusst.

Wie k\u00f6nnen wir uns also gegen diese scheinbar un\u00fcberwindliche Welle unregulierten Geldes und Einflusses wehren?<\/strong>

First. Don't lose heart. There are some Republicans in the State Senate who are not on board with the GAB overhaul bill. 

<\/a>Nehmen Sie also Kontakt zu Ihren Abgeordneten auf und sagen Sie ihnen, was Sie dar\u00fcber denken. Zeigen Sie Leidenschaft. Machen Sie sich Geh\u00f6r.<\/a><\/strong>

Stellen Sie als N\u00e4chstes sicher, dass Sie \u2013 und jeder Wahlberechtigte, den Sie kennen \u2013 als W\u00e4hler registriert sind und \u00fcber einen der erforderlichen Lichtbildausweise verf\u00fcgen, um Ihre Stimme abgeben zu k\u00f6nnen.

Und dann \u2013 wenn Wahlen anstehen (ob Pr\u00e4sidentschaftswahlen oder nicht) \u2013 w\u00e4hlen Sie Ihre Stimme.
