Vor einigen Wochen haben die Kandidaten f\u00fcr die Parlaments\u00e4mter in Wisconsin ihre Nominierungsunterlagen und die erforderlichen Unterschriften f\u00fcr die kommenden Vorwahlen im August und die allgemeinen Wahlen im November eingereicht. Schockierend ist, wie viele Parlaments- und Senatswahlen den B\u00fcrgern von Wisconsin, die in diesen Wahlkreisen leben, keine wirkliche Auswahl an Kandidaten bieten.<\/p>


Es gibt 99 Sitze in der Wisconsin Assembly. Nach den am 1. Juni eingereichten Wahlen werden mehr als ein Drittel aller Einwohner von Wisconsin bei der Wahl ihres Staatsvertreters im November \u00fcberhaupt keine Wahl haben. Siebzehn republikanische und 17 demokratische Kandidaten \u2013 insgesamt 34 \u2013 haben \u00fcberhaupt keinen Gegenkandidaten. Und bei weiteren sechs Parlamentswahlen werden Amtsinhaber oder Kandidaten einer gro\u00dfen politischen Partei nur auf einen Gegner einer dritten Partei treffen. Im Senat wird es in sieben der 16 Wahlen dieses Jahres nur einen Kandidaten geben, der im Herbst zur Wahl oder Wiederwahl antritt. F\u00fcr die W\u00e4hler in diesen Wahlkreisen gibt es also keine Wahl.<\/p>


Dar\u00fcber hinaus kann man nur in zehn der 99 Wahlbezirke von Wisconsin davon ausgehen, dass es zwischen Republikanern und Demokraten auch nur ann\u00e4hernd einen harten Wettbewerb gibt, und nur in zwei der 16 Senatsbezirke, in denen 2016 Wahlen stattfinden, herrscht ein harter Konkurrenzkampf.<\/p>


 How did our state, once described as the nation's foremost laboratory for democracy, become, instead, one of the nation's most prominent examples of how elections are rigged? The 2011 redistricting process here is considered to be one the most extreme examples of hyperpartisan gerrymandering in American history and the worst ever, in Wisconsin. It was secretive, expensive to taxpayers and reduced by more than 100% the number of state legislative districts where voters have a genuine choice in general elections. That process also may have been unconstitutional, and a three-judge federal court panel may decide very soon to send a case to the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the 2011 Wisconsin gerrymander.<\/p>


Elected representatives are less responsive to their constituents when they have no fear of being defeated in elections. And unfair voting maps cause a more partisan and polarized Legislature where there is little meeting of minds. Bipartisan compromise to benefit citizens, rather than politicians, just doesn't happen.<\/p>


In Wisconsin, elected representatives choose who their constituents will be through gerrymandering. In a healthy democracy, constituents are supposed to choose their elected representatives. It doesn't have to be this way during the upcoming redistricting process in 2021. In Iowa, a non-partisan state agency redraws legislative and congressional district lines every 10 years following the decennial census, not partisan politicians. The results have been astonishing.<\/p>
