Regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender, or citizenship the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volksz\u00e4hlung in den Vereinigten Staaten<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is supposed to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make sure our government accurately represents our communities. However, history tells us this process can be weaponized for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/06\/a-brief-history-of-the-us-census\/564110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parteipolitischer Gewinn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. By undercounting people of color, particularly people of African descent, Latinos and Native Americans have their voices diminished. We will not have a complete picture of people living in our communities if everyone isn\u2019t counted accurately. As a flawed compromise and in complete disregard of their humanity, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for more than 75 years, <\/span>enslaved Africans <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were counted as only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/06\/a-brief-history-of-the-us-census\/564110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drei F\u00fcnftel eines Menschen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the purposes of Congressional representation and taxation. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And for nearly 80 years, Native Americans were completely excluded from the census. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, the census grew to be more detailed and slightly more inclusive and it became the mission of the census (at least on paper) to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/programs-surveys\/decennial-census\/2020-census.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ccount everyone once, only once and in the right place\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/06\/a-brief-history-of-the-us-census\/564110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the 1920s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, America\u2019s population had exploded and the 88% of \u201cwhite\u201d Americans were from various backgrounds and ethnicities. However, despite their growing size, it became clear the census was undercounting non-white communities in urban centers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/06\/a-brief-history-of-the-us-census\/564110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1940 census<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had missed 13% of black males, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citylab.com\/equity\/2018\/06\/a-brief-history-of-the-us-census\/564110\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1970<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> census missed 7.7% of all African Americans. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/2010-census-missed-15-million-minorities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2010<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Census Bureau had missed 1.5 million people of color, including 2.6% of African Americans, 1.5% of Hispanics, and 5% of Native Americans, while over-counting white Americans. Undercounting in major cities helped white, rural states hold onto their Congressional seats and state legislatures. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weaponization of the census is just another way that politicians manipulate our elections for partisan gain as undercounts translate into diluted votes, lack of representation in Congress, and billions of dollars in lost federal funding. Today, census data is responsible for more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gwipp.gwu.edu\/counting-dollars-2020-role-decennial-census-geographic-distribution-federal-funds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800 billion dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in state and local funding -- tax dollars <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that determine the location of hospitals, firehouses, schools, highways, and the size of our children's classrooms.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The systematic undercounting of communities of color continues into the modern era with the possible inclusion of a citizenship question on the 2020 census. According to the Census Bureau\u2019s own <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.osec.doc.gov\/opog\/FOIA\/Documents\/AR%20-%20FINAL%20FILED%20-%20ALL%20DOCS%20%5bCERTIFICATION-INDEX-DOCUMENTS%5d%206.8.18.pdf#page=1289\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forschung<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the citizenship question is expected to decrease the participation of immigrant communities for both citizens and noncitizens alike. <\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the 2020 census fast approaching, it is imperative we act now to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/savethecensus?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Ehashtag\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#SavetheCensus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and assure that local governments do everything in their power to accurately count all people living in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/actionnetwork.org\/petitions\/demand-a-far-and-accurate-census\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemeinschaften<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>"}}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.6 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
