Expanding democracy requires funding to educate voters<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\nCONNECTICUT \u2014 <\/span><\/b>Last week, Connecticut held its second <\/span>primary election with <\/span>the option to vote early. According to the Secretary of State, <\/span>8,700 voters cast ballots early<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0in an election without any competitive races.\u00a0 And yet, earlier this week, the Secretary told the media, <\/span>\u201cwe may have too many days of early voting.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n In April 2024, 18,000 people voted early in the State\u2019s first Presidential Preference Primary \u2013 a primary that traditionally has low voter turnout overall and little to no competition \u2013 <\/span>Secretary Thomas suggested this was a \u201cresounding success\u201d when speaking with reporters<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n

Statement of Cheri Quickmire, Common Cause in Connecticut Executive Director<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt is concerning that Secretary Thomas wants to jump ship before voters have a chance to hear early voting is an option for the first time in state history.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nBo<\/span>th elections in April a<\/span>nd August saw low turnout overall yet 18,000 voters chose to cast a ballot early in April. And we know from our national network of experts, voters in other states take advantage of voting as early as a month before election day.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWithout a high-stakes election or any funding to educate the public, it is too soon for the Secretary of the State to abandon early voting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nThe true test of early voting will occur in November when voters take to the polls in what is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested election in decades from the top of the ticket down.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe cannot draw any conclusions about early voting based on data to date.\u00a0 Instead, we must do everything possible to make sure voters know that early voting is an option.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n
