SALARY RANGE: $120,000 – $125,000/yr. with generous benefits package
The Vice president for State Operations will be responsible for the day-to-day management of state operations department and state staff.
Supervision of state operations and state staff: The Vice president for State Operations will be responsible for the day-to-day management of state operations department and state staff. Working with the President and state operations department, the Vice President is responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating state staff. The Vice President will develop executive director job description and interview and hire new state directors, develop and implement evaluation process for state executive directors and oversee the day-to-day management of state executive directors. A critical piece of the work will also include working with state directors to develop job descriptions for other state staff positions, assist and advise state directors on hiring decisions when necessary, and work with state executive directors is supporting professional development of staff. In addition, the Vice President will develop training opportunities for state executive directors on strengthening management skills, develop and implement state staff trainings and conduct individual and group staff training.
Fundraising and Development: Working in coordination with the development and state operations staff, the vice president for state operations will work to support state fundraising campaigns and assist with national fundraising including foundations and major donors. Responsibilities will include working with state staff to expand resources, including assisting in developing foundation targets, writing and editing grant proposals, identifying event opportunities and assisting in the event planning, identifying potential major donors and participating in major donor meetings as needed and developing donor materials.
Supporting national and state campaigns: Vice President will work with state and national staff on policy development for key issue areas. At times VP will serve on executive or steering committees working with key national and state allies to develop national and state field plans that increase our field resources and capabilities. The vice president will work with state staff to implement field plans, review state legislation and initiative language and work with national program team members on platform development and to review policy language as needed.
Participation in Senior management team: Work with Senior Management team to set direction for Common Cause, advise on major organizational decisions, and to develop internal policies. The Vice President for State Operations will also work with the Senior Management team to make annual budget recommendations to NGB for state support levels.
National Governing Board Management and Relations: Serve as staff liaison to Common Cause and Common Cause Education Fund Governing Board and States Committee. Responsibilities include participate in all NGB meetings, assist Senior Management team in NGB relations and serve as liaison with state advisory boards
Operations and Personnel: Working in coordination with the state operations staff and Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President for State Operations will work on overseeing and managing state budgets and planning. Assist with onboarding and orientation of state staff, work with human resources and management team on reviewing job and salary classifications. Additional responsibilities include assist in addressing state personnel issues.
This position requires a “can do” attitude and exceptional organizational skills, with a strong capacity to manage systems, projects & people. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal abilities, with capacity to recruit, motivate, delegate, supervise, bring together, and foster teamwork. This includes a demonstrated ability to work in a culturally competent manner to broker interests & develop shared vision among diverse stakeholders, and to represent organizational interests with sound judgment & professionalism. Experience working in state national coalitions plus, budget management and development experience required. Minimum of ten years’ experience in the nonprofit sector. Frequent travel required.
