As the City finalizes its recommendations, California Common Cause has released a roadmap of <\/span>core principles<\/span><\/a> to ensure that new amendments to the City Charter create a Commission that is truly independent and worthy of the public\u2019s trust.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\u201cAnything less than a fully independent redistricting process is not good enough for Los Angeles,\u201d said <\/span>Russia Chavis Cardenas, California Common Cause\u2019s voting rights & redistricting program manager<\/b>. \u201cTruly independent redistricting \u2013 free from the political gamesmanship that leads to gerrymandering \u2013 restores trust in our government and will build a City Council that is truly reflective of and prioritizes the needs of Angelenos.\u201d<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs one of the architects of California\u2019s statewide Citizens Redistricting Commission and one of the leading advocates for independent redistricting in local communities, California Common Cause\u2019s recommendations are informed by our <\/span>monitoring<\/span><\/a> of over 60 local jurisdictions during the most recent redistricting process, as well as two decades of experience monitoring and working with the state\u2019s Citizens Redistricting Commission.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAfter careful analysis of the Los Angeles City Council\u2019s Chief Legislative Analyst\u2019s <\/span>report<\/span><\/a> on independent redistricting, California Common Cause <\/span>recommends these core principles<\/span><\/a> to guide the creation of an independent commission:<\/span>\r\n
