Ensuring Accessibility and Transparency in the November 4th Special Election

California Common Cause, along with ACLU California Action, the League of Women Voters, and Unrig LA, sent joint letters to the Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Governor Gavin Newsom urging action to ensure that California’s November 4, 2025 statewide special election is fair, accessible, and transparent.

We called on the Secretary of State and Governor to:

  • Protect in-person voting access by limiting county waivers that reduce polling places and helping officials secure adequate locations.

  • Provide complete ballot translations in all required languages and work with experts to ensure accuracy and accessibility.

  • Fund robust voter education and outreach so that every community has the information they need to make their voices heard.

With a shortened timeline and reduced voting requirements under SB 280, the risks of underrepresentation are high — particularly for communities of color, language-minority voters, and low-income Californians. This election is a critical moment to uphold our state’s commitment to an inclusive democracy.
