According to the Pew Charitable Trusts' latest Elections Performance Index (EPI), California ranks 49th in the first comprehensive assessment of election administration in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Governor Brown Signs SB 27 -- Sheds Light on Dark Money

Today Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 27, reforming the Political Reform Act of 1974 to further regulate campaign financing, adding the requirement that committees disclose donors of $1000 or more where those donations were solicited for the purpose of making contributions or expenditures in California.

Overturn Citizens United Act will appear on California’s November Ballot

Today the Governor confirmed that Senate Bill 1272, the Overturn Citizens United Act will become law without his signature. SB 1272 will place an advisory question on the November 2014 ballot to ask voters if Congress should amend the United States Constitution to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission

Activists outside L.A. Times building protest potential sale to Koch brothers

About 200 protesters rallied Wednesday outside the headquarters of the Los Angeles Times to protest a potential sale of the newspaper to the politically conservative Koch brothers. The rally was one of a dozen nationwide at media properties owned by Tribune Co., which is considering selling The Times and seven other daily newspapers after emerging from bankruptcy late last year. Activists are seeking to pressure Tribune not to sell the papers to Charles and David Koch, billionaire siblings who fund a range of conservative causes.
