When describing President Donald Trump’s actions, there are usually a few easy options: a gamble, unprecedented, dramatic, and short-sighted.  

When it comes to his decision to blow up congressional districts’ maps by pushing Texas head-first into mid-decade redistricting, pick your favorite phrase above.  

And then add one more: unsuccessful. 

Because that’s exactly what the numbers are showing: Trump’s push to gerrymander continued control of the U.S. House is failing, with the best proposals showing Republican gains of 1 to 3 seats – max! 

This comes off a recent court decision overturning unfair maps in Utah, which has resulted in a partisan change of one seat toward Democrats. If you’d like a full state by state update, check out this recent blog.

A reminder:Common Cause does not, never has, and never will, support gerrymandering. When it comes to mid-decade redistricting, we established Fairness Criteria because we understood Donald Trump destroyed the political norm of redistricting only every 10 years.  

And now it’s clear, President Trump did it for no real gain. A failed gamble.

He pushed forward despite polling showing his own voters don’t support mid-decade redistricting. Voters of all partisan backgrounds want independent commissions to draw maps moving forward. 

Common Cause will continue the fight for all 50 states to have fair maps and independent redistricting commissions. That’s not a gamble – it’s what the people want.
