Common Cause Watchdog Newsletter—May 1, 2025
Happy Friday Eve and happy May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day. We made it to the end of the week!
We are happy to bring you The People’s Bi-Weekly Watchdog Newsletter, delivered to your inbox every other Thursday. We bring you the news you need to know from the nonpartisan source you can trust.
This week’s Common Cause newsletter is just a 4 minute read at 559 words.
🏛️ 100 Days of the Trump Administration
Trump’s first 100 days in office are already an all-out assault on our rights, our wallets, and our democracy. We won’t sit back. That’s why we launched the People’s Promise campaign: a vision for a government that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few. It’s about calling on elected officials—from Congress to city hall—to deliver on an economy that works for everyone, a government that serves the people and not the wealthiest among us, and equal rights and opportunity for all.
This summer, millions of Americans are rising up to make sure those promises are kept. Check out our PeoplesPromise.us to join us and see how you can get involved.
🗳️⛷️ Historic Voting Rights Legislation Passes in Colorado
While the Trump administration is slashing federal voting rights protections, our advocates with Colorado Common Cause are helping to pave a different path. The Colorado Voting Rights Act (COVRA) just passed through the state’s legislature and now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
Once signed, the COVRA would cement voting rights protections into state law, would give 1.37 million Coloradans access to multilingual ballots in their local elections, and would make Colorado the first state to create specific protections for LGBTQ+ voters and eligible voters confined in county jails.
📜⚖️ Protecting Birthright Citizenship at the Supreme Court
On April 29, Common Cause filed an amicus brief in Trump v. Casa Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court case challenging President Trump’s executive order attempting to end the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of citizenship to anyone born in the United States. In addition to defending birthright citizenship, the brief focuses on the Trump administration’s dangerous attempt to weaken federal courts by taking away their power to fully stop unconstitutional actions—one of the most important tools courts use to protect people’s rights and maintain the checks and balances that safeguard our democracy.
