Common Cause Arizona calls on Senators Gallego and Kelly to protect Arizona voters against a modern day poll tax
Phoenix – Common Cause Arizona is calling on Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly to stop the SAVE Act after it narrowly passed the U.S. House of Representatives today.
“Arizonans have already seen what a disaster the already existing Documented Proof of Citizenship laws have been in Arizona, but the SAVE Act goes even further and would disenfranchise even more Arizonans,” says Jenny Guzman, Program Director for Common Cause Arizona. “The SAVE Act is simply a voter suppression bill that would deny thousands their voice at the polls. Arizona is home to many tribal and rural voters who would be disproportionately impacted by this measure from Congress. Under the SAVE Act, they, alongside all Arizona voters, would be required to physically drive hours to their designated election office, to present either a passport or a birth certificate in combination with government photo ID to prove their citizenship status every time they even want to update their registration. Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly have seen the harm caused by previous voter suppression bills from our state legislature. We are calling on our Senators to be on the right side of history and protect Arizonans from this modern day poll tax.”
