Mid-Decade Swing: Latino Voters Could Ruin Trump’s Redistricting Gamble

One year later, and with the 2026 Texas primaries behind us, could Latino voters be signaling Trump’s redraws are looking like “dummymanders” all over GOP-controlled states?

When President Donald Trump told Texas to redraw its congressional map last summer, he made it clear it was all about holding onto his power Congress.

One year later, and with the 2026 Texas primaries behind us, could Latino voters be signaling Trump’s redraws are looking like “dummymanders” all over GOP-controlled states? It’s just the latest way Trump is still losing on mid-decade redistricting.

Let’s set the stage on how Trump’s mid-decade redistricting gamble is even more dangerous for the Republican party now.

1. Early 2026 results show swings to Democratic candidates

We may not have a lot of data on Latino voter patterns in 2026 yet, but we do know that there are some swings to Democratic candidates in races where Latinos are a significant voting population. If Latino voters swing back hard from their 2024 turn toward Trump, districts that were made less Republican could be in danger.

2.The polling is bad for President Donald Trump.

Polling shows widespread dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and his policies. Whether it’s tariffs, the economy, or other policies, very few of them are getting the thumbs up from Latinos in polling.

3. Other Republicans are sounding warnings.

Specifically, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says his Republican Party should be “clear eyed” about the political environment heading into November elections. Might want to go ahead and cancel that Florida redraw, Ron!

Of course, whether President Trump miscalculated will be determined in the November elections. If you want to support efforts in Congress to ban mid-decade redistricting in the future, click here. It’s a popular thing, according to Common Cause polling.
