When Benjamin Franklin emerged from the Constitutional Convention of 1787, a lady is said to have asked him: “Well Doctor, what have we got -- a republic or a monarchy?”

“A republic. If you can keep it,” the great man replied.

Common Cause is all about citizens keeping and strengthening the American republic. We believe every citizen should engage in our democracy and that if we’re to have a government that works “for the people,” we must make it “of the people” and “by the people.”

Because democracy has no “How To” manual, we’ve put together some suggestions on these pages to help make you a more effective advocate, locally and at the state and national levels. If you’ve read this far, chances are you’re already decided to join the fight. Thanks for that. We’re pleased to have you with us.
