Hours after Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing, a few senators immediately started playing politics, pledging to keep his seat on the Supreme Court empty for a whole year. Speak out now to nip this in the bud >>
And some Republican senators running for President followed suit, with Sen. Ted Cruz pledging to filibuster anyone President Obama nominates, and Sen. Marco Rubio agreeing that “we should wait until after November.”
This year, the Supreme Court will make multiple major decisions that could impact our environment, immigration, and even the right to vote. But these senators want to leave a critical vacancy at the highest court in the land empty -- until they can run out the clock on the Obama presidency.
But whether they like it or not, Barack Obama is still the president of the United States. These senators’ promise to deny the President’s nominee a fair hearing and a timely up-or-down vote -- regardless of his or her qualifications -- puts political opportunism before the Senate’s constitutional obligations.
We need a loud public outcry to show McConnell and the rest that their plan is backfiring. When you take action, your message will be sent to every senator who is trying to delay a new Supreme Court justice until next year. Tell the Senate to do their jobs now >>
