President Obama has nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. But he won't get a fair hearing from this Senate unless enough of us demand one.

But Mitch McConnell and his allies are refusing to even consider the President's nominee. Instead of doing their job and giving Judge Garland a fair hearing, these ultra-partisan senators are refusing to even meet with him!

This is when the real fight begins. The Senate must hold hearings and vote to confirm or reject Merrick Garland by June 8. That's 84 days from his nomination, the exact number of days it took to confirm Justice Kennedy in 1988 under similar circumstances. Anything longer will be an offense to the court, the Constitution, and the voters.

For that to happen, Mitch McConnell will need to reverse course on his plan to ignore the Constitution and leave a vacancy on the Court. And he'll only do that if enough of us speak out and tell him and other senators to do their jobs.

The Senate did its job with Justice Anthony Kennedy in 1988 -- once President Reagan announced his nomination, the Senate (with a Democratic majority) held a vote 84 days later. But this time, Sen. McConnell wants to run out the clock until the election -- ignoring historical precedent and the Senate's constitutional duty.

We know we can get a fair and timely hearing with enough public support -- we've already seen GOP Senators Mark Kirk and Susan Collins break ranks with McConnell. They have publicly said that the Senate should give the President's nominee fair consideration.

Now that President Obama has done his part and chosen Judge Merrick Garland, it's time for the Senate to do its job and give him a fair hearing and a timely vote. Sens. Collins and Kirk -- and many others in the Senate -- are going to do their jobs.

We need to support the senators that will do their jobs, change the minds of the ones that won't, and let the ones who are on the fence know that voters don't get to skip out on doing their jobs -- and neither should they.

Sign our petition today and tell the Senate to do its job!
